Based on the novel Foregone by Russell Banks
Scenario
Leonard Fife, one of the 60,000 conscientious objectors and deserters who fled to Canada to avoid service in Vietnam, reveals all his secrets to demythologize his mythological life. This is the second time Paul Schrader has directed one of Banks’ novels, after the film adaptation of Affliction (1997).
I saw the film at its premiere in Cannes
Quoted in the Film Trash Podcast: Episode 961: In a Violent Nature + TIFF 2024 (2024). “OH, CANADA” is a very original film from one of the masters of cinema, a true work of art.
It has beautiful cinematography and great production design
The film is beautifully made and has a strong visual impact. The acting is strong, especially that of Richard Gere, who plays the title character.
It may not be for everyone, but I think it is one of Paul Schrader’s greatest achievements and a gift to film lovers
He gives a wonderful and unforgettable performance in the style of Jack Nicholson in FIVE EASY PIECES – a complex, not always likeable, but captivating character. Recommended.
